Microsoft, a major investor in OpenAI, will have to wait to provide Windows users with access to ChatGPT on desktops. The new app will first be available to both free and paid users on Mac.
OpenAI announced in a blog post that the new ChatGPT desktop app for macOS is ready for release. Plus users started getting access on Monday. The app is designed to integrate smoothly into daily tasks and can be activated with a simple keyboard shortcut.
Unfortunately for Windows users, the app is not yet available on their platform. OpenAI mentioned in the blog that a Windows version is expected “later this year.”
Ina Fried from Axios reported on social media that OpenAI prioritized the Mac version because that’s where many of their users are.
Despite Microsoft’s substantial investment in OpenAI, estimated at $10 billion, the tech giant will have to wait. This investment has allowed Microsoft to incorporate ChatGPT technology into products like Bing and Office365 quickly.
This strategic move has helped Microsoft gain an edge over competitors like Google, even though Google has been a leader in AI for years.
The significant investment has also stirred controversy. Elon Musk, a cofounder of OpenAI, sued the company earlier this year, claiming the partnership with Microsoft went against OpenAI’s mission to benefit humanity.
